PLAYER PERSONALITIES
THE HIDDEN EDGE AT TSG HOFFENHEIM
It feels only right to start of todays blog on player personalities with reference to Jurgen Klopp, Klopp is widely regarded as one of the best man-manager of the 21st century, combining tactical acumen with a deeply empathetic, personality-driven approach to player management.
His philosophy centred on nurturing relationships and treating players as individuals based on their unique backgrounds, rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach.
This post covers the Hoffenheim squad as we enter season two, taking a deeper look at the personalities within our squad, and how they can be leveraged to give us gains both on and off the pitch.
PLAYER PERSONALITIES
Every player in Football Manager is assigned a predetermined, generated personality that provides managers with insight into how they may behave both on and off the pitch. A player’s personality can significantly influence how they are perceived, for better or worse. This is particularly important when scouting younger players, as personality plays a key role in assessing whether they are likely to fulfil their perceived potential.
A players personality affects his/her:
Match Performances
Progression and affinity towards training
Plans for the future & general happiness
Relationship with his teammates, coaching staff and manager (you)
Interactions and reaction to Media.
Personalities are determined by mental attributes ( Determination (D), and Leadership (L) and seven other hidden attributes (Professionalism, Pressure, Ambition, Important Matches, Sportsmanship, Temperament, Loyalty, Controversy) which are not viewable without the use of the editor - However, can be gauged through scout reports, reactions to interactions, team talks, and media comments.
PERSONALITIES AT A GLANCE
Having diverse and strong personalities among Team Leaders and Highly Influential Players in Football Manager creates a more stable and resilient dressing room, helping the squad cope with pressure, poor form, and big matches.
A balanced leadership group also boosts morale, positively influences younger players’ development, and strengthens the manager’s authority by reinforcing professionalism, discipline, and long‑term standards across the team.

MENTORING
In Football Manager, having a mix of personalities across your squad and backroom staff is huge for mentoring success. Strong leaders, driven professionals, and calm influencers all shape young players differently, helping players pick up better traits faster while keeping the dressing room balanced. IMO a diverse mix doesn’t just develop individuals—it creates a healthier, more resilient squad culture over the long term.
I hope that this blogs serves as a bit of a helping hand with regards to the importance of understanding personalities in Football Manager, and guides you to conduct your own deep dives in your own personal saves.
As we are so late in the FM cycle I am going to explore another save - this time with the view of producing another blog like this which can be of greater benefit to the community, rather than simply providing a read along.
